In 2021, the amount of ion-exchangers based on synthetic or natural polymers in primary forms exported in Eastern Europe surged to X tons, picking up by 18% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 19%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, polymer ion-exchangers exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +116.4% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Romania (X tons) was the key exporter of ion-exchangers based on synthetic or natural polymers in primary forms, committing 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), committing a 13% share of total exports. Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of ion-exchangers based on synthetic or natural polymers in primary forms. At the same time, Hungary (+15.3%), Russia (+9.4%) and Estonia (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lithuania (-3.9%), Ukraine (-14.5%) and Poland (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+8 p.p.), Romania (+7.2 p.p.), Hungary (+1.7 p.p.) and Estonia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ukraine (-8.3 p.p.) and Poland (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the largest polymer ion-exchangers supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Romania totaled +6.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+15.3% per year) and Estonia (+8.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 25% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, polymer ion-exchangers export price increased by +74.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of ion-exchangers based on synthetic or natural polymers in primary forms, when their volume decreased by -1.7% to X tons. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +15.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
In value terms, polymer ion-exchangers imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Russia was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 40% of total imports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Estonia (8.5%), Romania (8.2%) and Ukraine (6.6%). The following importers - Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each reached a 6.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Estonia (with a CAGR of +33.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ion-exchangers based on synthetic or natural polymers in primary forms in Eastern Europe, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +9.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+12.4% per year) and Romania (+2.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
