Leek Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European leek market declined remarkably to $X in 2022, falling by -18% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leek Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, leek production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 34%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Poland (X tons) remains the largest leek producing country in Eastern Europe, accounting for 89% of total volume. It was followed by Belarus (X tons), with a 3% share of total production. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Poland stood at -8.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (0.0% per year) and Bulgaria (-12.2% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Eastern Europe expanded to X tons per ha, with an increase of 3.1% against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the yield increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables production in Eastern Europe reached X ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the leek harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exported in Eastern Europe rose remarkably to X tons, picking up by 7.2% on 2021. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +24.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) was the key exporter of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, achieving 55% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons). All these countries together held near 40% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to leek exports from Poland stood at +23.3%. At the same time, Belarus (+98.9%), Bulgaria (+34.7%) and Latvia (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +98.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Belarus and Bulgaria increased by +45, +23 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +21.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (-1.7% per year) and Belarus (+102.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -15.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Leek Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

Leek imports dropped markedly to X tons in 2022, falling by -22.4% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, leek imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) represented the main importers of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, together creating 89% of total imports. Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest leek importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports. Romania, Russia, Hungary and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +18.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
