Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, exports of lemons and limes in Eastern Europe rose modestly to X tons, growing by 4.4% against the previous year. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 28%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lemon and lime exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Bulgaria (X tons) was the main exporter of lemons and limes, making up 44% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together took near 52% share of total exports.
Exports from Bulgaria increased at an average annual rate of +20.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+29.9%), Hungary (+19.0%) and Latvia (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +29.9% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-10.6%) and Lithuania (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bulgaria (+37 p.p.), Russia (+9.3 p.p.), Hungary (+5.1 p.p.) and Latvia (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-2 p.p.), Poland (-22.7 p.p.) and Lithuania (-26.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) remains the largest lemon and lime supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Bulgaria amounted to +23.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-0.2% per year) and Poland (-9.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, overseas purchases of lemons and limes decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lemon and lime imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together generating a 50% share of total imports. Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 17%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
