Luggage Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European luggage market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Luggage Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, luggage production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 20%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of luggage and handbags increased by 17% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -29.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, luggage exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) represented the main exporter of luggage and handbags, making up 38% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Hungary (14%), Romania (10%), Slovakia (6.3%) and Russia (6%). Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+27.0%), Belarus (+24.8%), Romania (+2.7%) and Hungary (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-6.0%) and Slovakia (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland, Russia and Belarus increased by +24, +5.1 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest luggage supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +21.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (-3.8% per year) and Romania (-0.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the amount of luggage and handbags imported in Eastern Europe soared to X tons, with an increase of 26% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total imports in 2021. Hungary (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (8.7%), Ukraine (7.3%) and the Czech Republic (6.3%). Slovakia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest luggage importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +13.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 24%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
