Lysine Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European lysine market surged to $X in 2022, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof decreased by -4.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 60%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lysine exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Lithuania was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), making up a 32% share of total exports. Hungary (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Russia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lysine supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Lithuania ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 92% share of total exports.
Poland, with a CAGR of +29.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Hungary ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, supplies from abroad of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lysine imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the largest importers of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof in Eastern Europe, together making up 56% of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Hungary (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 31% share of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +24.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Lithuania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 65% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +14.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
