The East European paper making machinery market surged to $X in 2021, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper making machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -11.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the major importer of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 50% of total imports in 2021. Poland (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Romania (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units). All these countries together held near 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Hungary (X units), Lithuania (X units) and Ukraine (X units) - each resulted at a 12% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+29.2%), Lithuania (+12.9%), the Czech Republic (+9.2%), Ukraine (+7.2%) and Poland (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Romania (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+19 p.p.) and Hungary (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-5.5 p.p.) and Romania (-10.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Hungary, Lithuania, Romania and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +34.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
