In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, machinery for packing exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Hungary (X units), Poland (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Romania (X units), Bulgaria (X units), Slovakia (X units), Estonia (X units), Lithuania (X units) and Russia (X units), together amounting to 95% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Hungary ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 57% of total exports. Romania, Russia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Estonia and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +30.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Slovakia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of machinery for packing or wrapping, when their volume decreased by -6% to X units. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.6% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

All these countries together took approx. 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Bulgaria (X units) and Ukraine (X units) - each resulted at a 6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to machinery for packing imports into Russia stood at +2.3%. At the same time, Hungary (+9.1%), Poland (+6.2%), Romania (+6.0%), the Czech Republic (+5.7%) and Bulgaria (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+4.1 p.p.), Hungary (+2.7 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+1.9 p.p.) and Romania (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ukraine (-2.1 p.p.) and Russia (-3.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for packing or wrapping in Eastern Europe, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 9.6% share.

In Russia, machinery for packing imports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+3.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (+6.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
