Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, preserved mackerel exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Latvia represented the major exporter of mackerel (prepared or preserved) in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2021. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Russia (13%) and Bulgaria (7.1%). Lithuania (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Latvia ($X), Poland ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 86% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +25.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, overseas purchases of mackerel (prepared or preserved) decreased by -6.3% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved mackerel imports rose to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +46.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Romania (X tons) was the major importer of mackerel (prepared or preserved), committing 38% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Belarus (9.1%), Slovakia (8.6%), Estonia (8.4%), Lithuania (7.6%) and Latvia (5%).
Imports into Romania increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Estonia (+15.8%), Lithuania (+7.0%), Slovakia (+3.3%), Belarus (+3.1%) and the Czech Republic (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Latvia (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Romania (+22 p.p.), Estonia (+5.4 p.p.) and Lithuania (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Latvia (-4.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Romania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mackerel (prepared or preserved) in Eastern Europe, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 10% share.
In Romania, preserved mackerel imports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+3.4% per year) and Slovakia (+3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
