In value terms, exports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland was the key exporter of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 44% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Slovakia (8.5%), the Czech Republic (7.2%) and Ukraine (6.6%). Belarus (X tons) and Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+26.2%), Russia (+22.0%), the Czech Republic (+13.2%), Slovakia (+12.5%), Belarus (+3.8%) and Ukraine (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012-2022. Russia (+13 p.p.), Poland (+3 p.p.), Romania (+2.3 p.p.), Slovakia (+2.3 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -6.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starch supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +10.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+15.2% per year) and Russia (+14.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, supplies from abroad of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches increased by 0.1% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +5.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of malt extract and food preparations of flour, meal, and starches reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +10.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 47%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented roughly 80% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), constituting a 4.6% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 65% of total imports. Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +15.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
