In 2021, the East European malt market decreased by -4% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. In 2021, overseas shipments of malt (not roasted) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Exports by Country

Russia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented roughly 69% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.6% share, followed by Poland (8.4%) and Lithuania (5.8%). Ukraine (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +48.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest malt supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Slovakia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 70% of total exports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +40.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of malt (not roasted) increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Poland represented the largest importer of malt (not roasted) in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together constituting a 40% share of total imports. Estonia (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ukraine (+21.7%) and the Czech Republic (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Estonia (-1.1%), Russia (-3.4%), Moldova (-3.6%), Romania (-4.8%) and Hungary (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+13 p.p.) and Ukraine (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Hungary (-3.5 p.p.), Russia (-5.2 p.p.) and Romania (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-7.5% per year) and Romania (-7.3% per year).
