In value terms, marble building stone exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bulgaria was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 41% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons), together making up a 48% share of total exports. Estonia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Bulgaria increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Estonia (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012-2021. Belarus, Russia and Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lithuania (-3.7%) and Poland (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bulgaria (+12 p.p.) and Estonia (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Lithuania (-3.1 p.p.) and Poland (-7.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest marble building stone supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Estonia ($X), with a combined 55% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Estonia, with a CAGR of +15.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -16.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of marble building stone increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +86.5% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Bulgaria (15%), Ukraine (7.9%) and Poland (6.7%). Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble building stone imports into Romania stood at +18.4%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+22.5%), Slovakia (+18.6%) and Hungary (+15.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +22.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ukraine (-1.3%), Poland (-4.2%) and Russia (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Romania (+26 p.p.), Bulgaria (+12 p.p.), Hungary (+2.5 p.p.) and Slovakia (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine, Poland and Russia saw its share reduced by -5.4%, -8% and -27.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Romania ($X) and Ukraine ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 20%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +14.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
