Mate Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the East European mate market, when its value decreased by -26.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a strong increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Mate Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, mate production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of mate production, comprising approx. 92% of total volume. Moreover, mate production in the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bulgaria (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in the Czech Republic stood at +22.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bulgaria (-0.5% per year) and Lithuania (-0.8% per year).

Mate Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

For the fifth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of mate, which increased by 64% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mate exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 120%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), generating a 10% share of total exports. Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Czech Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mate exports, with a CAGR of +38.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+36.7%) and Russia (+28.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of the Czech Republic (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-2.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest mate supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In the Czech Republic, mate exports expanded at an average annual rate of +33.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+50.4% per year) and Russia (+31.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -30.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 70% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mate Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, purchases abroad of mate decreased by -32.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 117%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, mate imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) was the main importer of mate, comprising 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together mixing up a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mate imports into Poland stood at +17.6%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+73.4%), Romania (+23.7%), the Czech Republic (+23.3%), Hungary (+21.2%) and Lithuania (+19.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +73.4% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary increased by +16, +14, +2.6, +2.2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest mate importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Russia ($X), together comprising 77% of total imports. Romania, Lithuania, Hungary and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +72.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
