Market Size for Meat of Camels and Other Animals in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the East European market for meat of camels and other animals decreased by -0.9% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Meat of Camels and Other Animals in Eastern Europe

In value terms, camel and other animal meat production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 29%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of camel and other animal meat production, comprising approx. 91% of total volume. Moreover, camel and other animal meat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia stood at +3.2%.

In 2022, the average camel and other animal meat yield in Eastern Europe shrank modestly to X tons per head, which is down by -3.4% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the camel and other animal meat yield attained the peak level at X tons per head in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in Eastern Europe; with an increase of 1.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the number of producing animals, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 3% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of meat of camels and other animals increased by 1.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +7.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports soared to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) was the main exporter of meat of camels and other animals, comprising 61% of total exports. Hungary (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by the Czech Republic (9.5%). Slovakia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to camel and other animal meat exports from Poland stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Lithuania (+33.9%), Slovakia (+30.3%), Estonia (+8.5%), the Czech Republic (+4.3%) and Hungary (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +33.9% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Slovakia (+3.7 p.p.) and Lithuania (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hungary (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 12% share.

In Poland, camel and other animal meat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (-0.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (+1.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, imports of meat of camels and other animals in Eastern Europe contracted to X tons, falling by -7.4% compared with 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 86%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the key importers of meat of camels and other animals in 2022, resulting at near 33% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Slovakia (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (14%) and Estonia (8.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 75% of total imports. Romania and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +7.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 31%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
