Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +38.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+47.6%) and Ukraine (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +47.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bulgaria (-7.0%) and Poland (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+66 p.p.), Belarus (+15 p.p.) and Ukraine (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Bulgaria (-3.8 p.p.) and Poland (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest medicaments containing penicillin supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with an 8% share.

In Belarus, medicaments containing penicillin exports expanded at an average annual rate of +75.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bulgaria (+25.3% per year) and Russia (+16.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 173% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+34.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Medicaments containing penicillin imports reduced to X tons in 2021, waning by -3.9% on 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 65%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, medicaments containing penicillin imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. While the share of Romania (+59 p.p.), Ukraine (+4.1 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-2.8 p.p.), Poland (-24 p.p.) and Hungary (-29.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Romania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof in Eastern Europe, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9.4% share.

In Romania, medicaments containing penicillin imports increased at an average annual rate of +33.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+6.3% per year) and Poland (-8.6% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
