In 2021, the amount of mixtures of slag exported in Eastern Europe fell remarkably to X tons, which is down by -27.2% compared with the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 283% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mixtures of slag exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 112%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Latvia represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together generating a 34% share of total exports.

Latvia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mixtures of slag exports, with a CAGR of +38.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Latvia (+62 p.p.), Belarus (+17 p.p.) and Hungary (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -11.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest mixtures of slag supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Latvia ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 3% share.

In Russia, mixtures of slag exports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Latvia (+39.4% per year) and Belarus (-8.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

Mixtures of slag imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 74% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 175%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mixtures of slag imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 137%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Latvia was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), achieving a 31% share of total imports. Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mixtures of slag imports into Latvia stood at -9.1%. At the same time, Slovakia (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +6.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Latvia increased by +6.8 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest mixtures of slag importing markets in Eastern Europe were Latvia ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 89% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +4.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 127%.
