The East European dried mushroom market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a abrupt contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried mushroom production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

Dried mushroom exports totaled X tons in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 48%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried mushroom exports reached $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +33.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) was the key exporter of dried mushrooms and truffles, mixing up 50% of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 44% share of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried mushrooms and truffles exports, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+6.5%), Romania (+5.1%), Bulgaria (+2.2%) and Russia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Poland (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Romania (-1.9 p.p.), Russia (-5.4 p.p.) and Bulgaria (-9.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Romania ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 84% of total exports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -11.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of dried mushrooms and truffles were imported in Eastern Europe; growing by 7.1% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried mushroom imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the main importers of dried mushrooms and truffles in Eastern Europe, together resulting at near 59% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (5.3%) and Bulgaria (4.7%). The following importers - Ukraine (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - together made up 7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +4.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried mushrooms and truffles in Eastern Europe, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+7.9% per year) and Romania (+11.5% per year).
