For the third year in a row, the East European noils of wool market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a slight decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of noils of wool or fine animal hair was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +106.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belarus (-6.3%) and Russia (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bulgaria (+12 p.p.), Romania (+2.9 p.p.) and Moldova (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Belarus (-1.7 p.p.), Russia (-3 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-10.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest noils of wool supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 1.5% share.

In the Czech Republic, noils of wool exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+29.0% per year) and Russia (-11.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 13%. In 2021, overseas purchases of noils of wool or fine animal hair increased by 64% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, noils of wool imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Lithuania (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together making up a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Russia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest noils of wool importing markets in Eastern Europe were Lithuania ($X), Slovakia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 97% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +11.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
