After nine years of growth, shipments abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved) decreased by -2.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +78.1% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Russia was the main exporter of nuts (prepared or preserved) in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 48% of total exports in 2021. Hungary (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Bulgaria (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together held near 34% share of total exports. The following exporters - Moldova (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each resulted at a 7.9% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+51.4%), Moldova (+29.9%), Bulgaria (+11.3%), Poland (+9.4%), Hungary (+5.8%) and the Czech Republic (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +51.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Belarus, Moldova and Bulgaria increased by +20, +5.1, +3.5 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest nuts (prepared or preserved) supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +12.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+7.2% per year) and Poland (+6.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, supplies from abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved) increased by 9.9% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +91.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the major importers of nuts (prepared or preserved), together committing 87% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nuts (prepared or preserved) in Eastern Europe, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 12% share.
In Poland, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (-1.6% per year) and Romania (+21.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
