Onion And Shallot Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European onion and shallot market rose modestly to $X in 2022, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The average onion and shallot yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the onion and shallot yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the onion and shallot harvested area in Eastern Europe expanded modestly to X ha, increasing by 1.7% against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 2.3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to onion and shallot production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of onions and shallots was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 83%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the main exporter of onions and shallots in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total exports. Moldova (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+61.7%), Moldova (+48.9%) and Slovakia (+17.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +61.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+17 p.p.), Slovakia (+3.3 p.p.), Moldova (+2.8 p.p.) and Poland (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest onion and shallot supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 4.5% share.

In Poland, onion and shallot exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovakia (+19.1% per year) and Russia (+48.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion and shallot export price decreased by -2.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of onions and shallots increased by 33% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 57%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the largest importers of onions and shallots in Eastern Europe, together comprising 56% of total imports. Ukraine (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Romania (9.2%) and the Czech Republic (8.4%). Bulgaria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +53.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
