The East European optical fiber and bundle market reduced rapidly to $X in 2022, falling by -24.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a perceptible shrinkage. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of optical fibers and bundles decreased by -13.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after seven years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 256% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, optical fiber and bundle exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 111%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Romania (X tons) represented the main exporter of optical fibers and bundles, achieving 41% of total exports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by the Czech Republic (23%). Russia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +65.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Romania ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +80.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 76% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of optical fibers and bundles increased by 65% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, optical fiber and bundle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed strong growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Romania (X tons) was the key importer of optical fibers and bundles, making up 59% of total imports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Russia (9.1%). The Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Romania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the optical fibers and bundles imports, with a CAGR of +40.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Slovakia (+24.7%), Poland (+14.4%), Hungary (+13.3%) and the Czech Republic (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Russia (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Romania (+52 p.p.) and Poland (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -40.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Romania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported optical fibers and bundles in Eastern Europe, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Romania totaled +37.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+6.2% per year) and Russia (-3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -18.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
