Ethylene Oxide Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European ethylene oxide market dropped rapidly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -21.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 14%. In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of oxirane (ethylene oxide), when their volume increased by 8.2% to X tons. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -35.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 67%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethylene oxide exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), constituting a 4.8% share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the oxirane (ethylene oxide) exports, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012 to 2022. Poland (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Poland saw its share reduced by -25.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest ethylene oxide supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +2.6%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.0%).

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, imports of oxirane (ethylene oxide) in Eastern Europe plummeted to X tons, with a decrease of -27.1% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +11.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 53%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, ethylene oxide imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 89% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Slovakia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the largest importers of oxirane (ethylene oxide) in Eastern Europe, together comprising 81% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), making up a 16% share of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 96% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +6.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Romania ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
