Papaya Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European papaya market fell to $X in 2022, shrinking by -9.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -27.2% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Papaya Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, papaya production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of papaya production was Bulgaria (X tons), comprising approx. 95% of total volume. Moreover, papaya production in Bulgaria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Lithuania (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Bulgaria, papaya production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.

Papaya Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of papayas decreased by -31.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 291%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, papaya exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2022. Hungary (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.4% share, followed by the Czech Republic (4.5%). Poland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to papaya exports from Bulgaria stood at +51.7%. At the same time, Hungary (+72.2%), Poland (+22.8%) and the Czech Republic (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +72.2% from 2012-2022. Bulgaria (+81 p.p.), Hungary (+9.4 p.p.) and Poland (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Hungary ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 86% share of total exports.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +75.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Papaya Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, papaya imports in Eastern Europe plummeted to X tons, dropping by -22.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, papaya imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the main importer of papayas in Eastern Europe, achieving 76% of total import. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together making up an 11% share of total imports. Slovakia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +27.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 67% of total imports. Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +29.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 5.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, papaya import price increased by +97.2% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+17.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
