Peach And Nectarine Market Size in Eastern Europe

For the third year in a row, the East European peach and nectarine market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, peach and nectarine production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 64% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), with a combined 54% share of total production. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and Poland, which together accounted for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average peach and nectarine yield expanded notably to X tons per ha in 2021, with an increase of 13% compared with 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the peach and nectarine yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of peaches and nectarines in Eastern Europe rose to X ha, with an increase of 3.1% compared with the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 7.8% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

For the fourth year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded decline in shipments abroad of peaches and nectarines, which decreased by -32.8% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 89%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, peach and nectarine exports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) was the key exporter of peaches and nectarines, generating 33% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Bulgaria (14%), Lithuania (14%), Moldova (9.4%) and Russia (4.9%). The Czech Republic (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to peach and nectarine exports from Poland stood at -11.1%. At the same time, Russia (+18.1%), Moldova (+15.5%), Belarus (+5.9%) and Bulgaria (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-8.7%) and Lithuania (-18.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus, Bulgaria, Moldova and Russia increased by +11, +9.3, +8.3 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 69% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Moldova, Belarus and Russia, which together accounted for a further 20%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Moldova, with a CAGR of +11.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 45%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the fourth year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded decline in supplies from abroad of peaches and nectarines, which decreased by -9.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, peach and nectarine imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the largest importer of peaches and nectarines, making up 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together mixing up a 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Bulgaria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each recorded a 12% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bulgaria (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +1.4% from 2012-2021. Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belarus (-2.6%), Poland (-3.3%), the Czech Republic (-5.6%) and Ukraine (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+6.1 p.p.) and Romania (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine saw its share reduced by -3.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -1.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+2.2% per year) and Romania (+11.7% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, peach and nectarine import price increased by +65.8% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
