Dry Peas Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European dry peas market contracted to $X in 2021, shrinking by -13.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of dry peas production, accounting for 65% of total volume. Moreover, dry peas production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ukraine (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Lithuania (X tons), with a 7.7% share.

In Russia, dry peas production increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Ukraine (+4.6% per year) and Lithuania (+22.5% per year).

The average dry peas yield declined modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, remaining stable against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 23%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The dry peas harvested area declined slightly to X ha in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dry peas harvested area increased by +1.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

Dry peas exports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 27% against 2020. Overall, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 87%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Russia was the largest exporter of peas (dry) in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2021. Ukraine (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Latvia (+88.0%), Estonia (+37.8%), Lithuania (+21.2%), Ukraine (+7.0%) and the Czech Republic (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +88.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia increased by +4.4, +3.2 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest dry peas supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 5.3% share.

In Russia, dry peas exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ukraine (+6.3% per year) and Lithuania (+17.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of peas (dry), when their volume decreased by -17.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, dry peas imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Latvia was the main importer of peas (dry) in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together comprising a 36% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Latvia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (dry) imports, with a CAGR of +59.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+28.2%), Estonia (+14.5%), Poland (+11.9%), Hungary (+7.7%), Belarus (+5.6%) and Romania (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Russia (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Latvia (+48 p.p.) and Lithuania (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Romania (-3.4 p.p.), Hungary (-6.2 p.p.), Belarus (-6.4 p.p.), Poland (-7.8 p.p.) and Russia (-19.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dry peas importing markets in Eastern Europe were Latvia ($X), Poland ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 63% of total imports.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +51.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a deep slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
