In 2022, the East European green peas market increased by 5.8% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The average green peas yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -11.7% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 63%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the green peas yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X tons of peas (green) were exported in Eastern Europe; waning by -46.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 875%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, green peas exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 508% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented roughly 64% of total exports in 2022. Latvia (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (8.4%), Hungary (7.2%) and Lithuania (5.9%).

In value terms, the largest green peas supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Slovakia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 59% of total exports. Latvia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +62.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 61% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a notable increase. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of peas (green) increased by 48% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 73%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green peas imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) was the major importer of peas (green), creating 44% of total imports. Latvia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by the Czech Republic (16%), Romania (7.7%) and Slovakia (5.3%). Poland (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Hungary was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (green) imports, with a CAGR of +65.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+38.1%), Slovakia (+7.3%) and the Czech Republic (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Bulgaria (-3.9%), Romania (-6.1%) and Poland (-18.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Hungary and Latvia increased by +43 and +16 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest green peas importing markets in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Hungary ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +42.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -19.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
