Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 796%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, phosphinates and phosphonates exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 328%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Poland dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2022. Bulgaria (X tons) held an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Hungary (8.2%) and Russia (4.7%). The Czech Republic (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to phosphinates and phosphonates exports from Poland stood at +29.9%. At the same time, Hungary (+112.5%), the Czech Republic (+47.1%), Bulgaria (+31.8%), Russia (+24.0%) and Lithuania (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +112.5% from 2012-2022. Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Poland (+17 p.p.), Hungary (+8.2 p.p.), Bulgaria (+2.9 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Lithuania (-11.9 p.p.) and Slovakia (-17.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest phosphinates and phosphonates supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 5.6% share.

In Poland, phosphinates and phosphonates exports increased at an average annual rate of +29.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+53.3% per year) and Hungary (+107.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 39% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+16.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites) imported in Eastern Europe rose slightly to X tons, picking up by 4% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, phosphinates and phosphonates imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the main importers of phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites) in Eastern Europe, together mixing up 73% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 19% share of total imports. Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest phosphinates and phosphonates importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 81% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +13.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -12.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, phosphinates and phosphonates import price increased by +6.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 33%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+9.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
