In 2022, overseas shipments of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +20.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Poland represented the major exporter of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 52% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Lithuania (16%) and Bulgaria (7.1%). Russia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+65.8%) and Lithuania (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +65.8% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-2.4%) and Hungary (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic increased by +27, +14, +7 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest pigments, opacifiers and colours supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Lithuania ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports. Bulgaria, Russia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
Among the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +57.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -16.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pigments, opacifiers and colours export price decreased by -16.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+14.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass were imported in Eastern Europe; dropping by -11% compared with 2021. Overall, imports showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 9%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total imports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Hungary (7.9%). Romania (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass in Eastern Europe, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 15% share.
In Poland, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-6.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (-1.7% per year).
