Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of pineapples decreased by -27% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 33%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) represented the key exporter of pineapples, making up 41% of total exports. Hungary (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Lithuania (15%), Slovakia (9.6%), Russia (6.9%) and Latvia (6.6%). The Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+33.6%), Hungary (+22.8%) and Latvia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +33.6% from 2012-2022. Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-6.6%) and Lithuania (-20.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+25 p.p.), Hungary (+15 p.p.), Russia (+6.7 p.p.), Slovakia (+5.1 p.p.) and Latvia (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lithuania saw its share reduced by -55.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lithuania (-18.8% per year) and Hungary (+22.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of pineapples imported in Eastern Europe reduced sharply to X tons, waning by -15.7% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the major importer of pineapples, achieving 45% of total imports. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together held near 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Slovakia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pineapple imports into Russia stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Romania (+10.6%), Hungary (+7.6%), Slovakia (+1.4%), Bulgaria (+1.4%) and Poland (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.0%), Latvia (-1.6%), Ukraine (-6.0%) and Lithuania (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia, Romania, Hungary and Poland increased by +8.6, +4.4, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pineapples in Eastern Europe, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +5.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+2.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (-2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Latvia ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
