Pistachio Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European pistachio market stood at $X in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 98% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pistachio exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Slovakia (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the major exporter of pistachios in Eastern Europe, making up 78% of total export. Lithuania (X tons) took an 8.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (7.2%). Poland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +200.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pistachio supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Slovakia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 66% share of total exports. Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Among the main exporting countries, Estonia, with a CAGR of +173.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -17.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+26.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

Pistachio imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) represented the main importer of pistachios, comprising 34% of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Russia (14%), the Czech Republic (11%) and Slovakia (8.5%). The following importers - Romania (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each amounted to an 8.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+15.2%), Belarus (+13.3%), Lithuania (+10.9%), Slovakia (+5.0%) and Romania (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-22.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus and Romania increased by +28, +13, +10, +6.2, +3.7 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pistachios in Eastern Europe, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland totaled +9.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lithuania (+11.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+15.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
