The East European plastic reservoir market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. The total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +26.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The level of production peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports in Eastern Europe

After seven years of growth, overseas shipments of plastic reservoirs, tanks and vats decreased by -8.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, plastic reservoir exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the main exporter of plastic reservoirs, tanks and vats in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 50% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Slovakia (8.5%), Latvia (8%), Estonia (6.2%) and Russia (5.6%). Lithuania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +17.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+23.9%), Slovakia (+15.6%), Latvia (+14.1%), Estonia (+9.3%), Lithuania (+8.4%) and the Czech Republic (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Poland (+18 p.p.), Russia (+3.5 p.p.) and Slovakia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Lithuania (-1.5 p.p.), Estonia (-2.2 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest plastic reservoir supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland amounted to +14.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+5.0% per year) and Slovakia (+17.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 8.8% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of plastic reservoirs, tanks and vats were imported in Eastern Europe; growing by 4.3% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, plastic reservoir imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic was the largest importer of plastic reservoirs, tanks and vats in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (11%), Hungary (10%), Slovakia (7.5%), Lithuania (6%) and Bulgaria (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic reservoir imports into the Czech Republic stood at +8.5%. At the same time, Hungary (+17.6%), Bulgaria (+11.3%), Lithuania (+10.5%), Romania (+9.1%), Slovakia (+7.4%) and Poland (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Hungary (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Poland (-1.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest plastic reservoir importing markets in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 53% of total imports.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +19.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Slovakia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
