The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. In value terms, plastic bag exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +21.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Poland (X tons) was the key exporter of plastic sacks and bags, generating 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together mixing up a 38% share of total exports. Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+8.2%), Bulgaria (+5.2%), Hungary (+4.2%), Lithuania (+4.0%) and the Czech Republic (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +8.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Slovakia (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Czech Republic and Slovakia saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest plastic bag supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 9% share.

In Poland, plastic bag exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+4.0% per year) and Lithuania (+5.4% per year).

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
