In 2021, the East European plastic household ware market decreased by -12.1% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of plastics household articles and toilet articles was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic household ware exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +14.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Poland (X tons) was the key exporter of plastics household articles and toilet articles, achieving 51% of total exports. Hungary (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bulgaria (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic household ware exports from Poland stood at +6.1%. At the same time, Russia (+15.8%), the Czech Republic (+6.6%), Romania (+5.1%), Bulgaria (+4.0%), Slovakia (+3.9%) and Hungary (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2021. Russia (+4.8 p.p.) and Poland (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hungary saw its share reduced by -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest plastic household ware supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 12% share.

In Poland, plastic household ware exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+8.0% per year) and Hungary (+5.3% per year).

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Plastic household ware imports rose sharply to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 13% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +56.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, plastic household ware imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +96.6% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) represented roughly 86% of total imports in 2021. Bulgaria (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 58% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +14.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
