In 2021, the East European polyethylene in primary forms market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +57.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 43%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, polyethylene in primary forms exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +91.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia represented the major exporter of polyethylene in primary forms in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 41% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together achieving a 44% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belarus (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - together made up 7.5% of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the polyethylene in primary forms exports, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+14.9%), Slovakia (+7.0%), the Czech Republic (+3.2%) and Hungary (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belarus and Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Lithuania increased by +22 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest polyethylene in primary forms supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 15% share.

As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
