In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols, when their volume decreased by -7.7% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 135%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Estonia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), mixing up a 5.7% share of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Estonia increased at an average annual rate of +35.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lithuania (+81.7%) and the Czech Republic (+24.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +81.7% from 2012-2022. Estonia (+33 p.p.) and Lithuania (+5.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest polyphenols and phenol-alcohols supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Estonia ($X), Lithuania ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Lithuania, with a CAGR of +76.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, imports of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols in Eastern Europe reduced slightly to X tons, standing approx. at 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by the Czech Republic (18%) and Hungary (9.8%). The following importers - Slovakia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - together made up 5.7% of total imports.

In value terms, the largest polyphenols and phenol-alcohols importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 85% of total imports. Hungary, Slovakia and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

Lithuania, with a CAGR of +31.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols import price increased by +68.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
