The East European polypropylene in primary forms market shrank to $X in 2022, which is down by -5.4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Production of Polypropylene in Primary Forms in Eastern Europe
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 24%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of polypropylene in primary forms decreased by -1.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the main exporter of polypropylene in primary forms in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 50% share of total exports. Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the polypropylene in primary forms exports, with a CAGR of +30.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+7.0%), Hungary (+6.6%), Slovakia (+4.4%), Poland (+3.1%) and Bulgaria (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Russia (+37 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hungary (-2.1 p.p.), the Czech Republic (-3.7 p.p.), Bulgaria (-4.2 p.p.), Romania (-6.3 p.p.), Slovakia (-7 p.p.) and Poland (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Slovakia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total exports.
Russia, with a CAGR of +24.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 55% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Polypropylene in Primary Forms
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, purchases abroad of polypropylene in primary forms decreased by -10% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.8% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Poland was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 35% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held near 58% share of total imports.
Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+11.6%), Romania (+8.5%), Slovakia (+7.8%), Hungary (+6.7%), the Czech Republic (+2.8%) and Belarus (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+12 p.p.), Bulgaria (+3.4 p.p.) and Romania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-4.3 p.p.) and Russia (-7.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Slovakia, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +12.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Slovakia ($X per ton) and Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
