Poppy Seed Market Size in Eastern Europe

The Czech Republic (X tons) remains the largest poppy seed producing country in Eastern Europe, comprising approx. 70% of total volume. Moreover, poppy seed production in the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hungary (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovakia (X tons), with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in the Czech Republic stood at -1.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Hungary (-0.7% per year) and Slovakia (+25.6% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of poppy seed in Eastern Europe rose significantly to X kg per ha, increasing by 12% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the poppy seed yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of poppy seed in Eastern Europe declined to X ha, almost unchanged from 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, shipments abroad of poppy seed increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, poppy seed exports amounted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -8.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 66% of total exports. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Slovakia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports.
Exports from the Czech Republic decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Slovakia (+21.8%), Poland (+6.9%) and Hungary (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland and Slovakia increased by +6.9 and +6.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest poppy seed supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with an 8.4% share.
In the Czech Republic, poppy seed exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+12.3% per year) and Slovakia (+17.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, poppy seed export price decreased by -29.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 60% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Hungary ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of poppy seed were imported in Eastern Europe; picking up by 8.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, poppy seed imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Poland represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 39% of total imports. Russia (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (12%), Hungary (6.8%), Slovakia (6.6%) and Ukraine (6.3%). Romania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest poppy seed importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports.
Poland, with a CAGR of +14.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade.
