Potato Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European potato market expanded modestly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 1.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, potato production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons), with a combined 82% share of total production. These countries were followed by Belarus and Romania, which together accounted for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Romania (with a CAGR of +0.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

In 2021, the average potato yield in Eastern Europe shrank to X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the potato yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of potatoes production in Eastern Europe rose to X ha, picking up by 2% against 2020. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Potato Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, shipments abroad of potatoes decreased by -6.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Belarus represented the key exporter of potatoes in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 47% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together making up a 34% share of total exports. The following exporters - Latvia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - each recorded a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato exports from Belarus stood at +24.2%. At the same time, Latvia (+28.5%), Russia (+20.2%), Romania (+15.9%), Poland (+13.7%), Ukraine (+12.3%) and Lithuania (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +28.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus, Russia and Latvia increased by +26, +7.9 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) emerged as the largest potato supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus stood at +27.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+13.4% per year) and Poland (+14.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Potato Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of potatoes decreased by -3.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -8.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importer of potatoes in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2021. Romania (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - each finished at an 8.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato imports into Russia stood at +2.0%. At the same time, Ukraine (+38.6%), Hungary (+15.8%), the Czech Republic (+6.1%), Slovakia (+6.1%), Romania (+5.6%) and Poland (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +38.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Ukraine (+8.4 p.p.) and Hungary (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-3.5 p.p.) and Russia (-11.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potatoes in Eastern Europe, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +3.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+11.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (+7.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
