Over the period under review, exports posted prominent growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato starch exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 36%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together constituting an 11% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the potato starch exports, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belarus (-3.8%) and Latvia (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland increased by +14 percentage points.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest potato starch supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 5.9% share.

In Poland, potato starch exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+3.0% per year) and Belarus (-3.3% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of potato starch increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato starch imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Russia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 31% of total imports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Lithuania (7.4%), Belarus (6.3%), Hungary (5.9%), Slovakia (5.9%), the Czech Republic (5.9%), Romania (4.9%) and Ukraine (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 55% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +4.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Hungary ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
