Preserved swine meat exports contracted slightly to X tons in 2021, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved swine meat exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 65%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Poland was the major exporter of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved swine meat exports from Poland stood at +7.0%. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+17.1%), Slovakia (+12.0%) and Hungary (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of the Czech Republic (+7.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-2.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest preserved swine meat supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland totaled +8.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+17.1% per year) and Hungary (+8.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw slight growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
Preserved swine meat imports expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, increasing by 6.6% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +92.8% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, preserved swine meat imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.8% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of preserved swine meat imports in 2021 were Hungary (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together finishing at 85% of total import. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), mixing up a 7.4% share of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +19.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 58% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +20.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
