The East European canned vegetable market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe
For the third consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of canned vegetables, which increased by 1.9% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, canned vegetable exports rose to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +88.6% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Hungary (X tons) represented the key exporter of canned vegetables, generating 41% of total exports. Poland (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (16%). Belarus (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned vegetable supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Hungary ($X), Poland ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 74% of total exports. Belarus, Romania, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +19.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 9.7%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of canned vegetables were imported in Eastern Europe; almost unchanged from 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -1.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canned vegetable imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 34% of total imports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Romania (13%), the Czech Republic (9.6%), Hungary (6%) and Bulgaria (5.6%). Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of canned vegetables. At the same time, Hungary (+9.4%), Romania (+7.7%), Poland (+6.7%), Bulgaria (+5.2%) and the Czech Republic (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+4.6 p.p.), Romania (+4.5 p.p.) and Hungary (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ukraine (-3.1 p.p.) and Russia (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canned vegetables in Eastern Europe, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with an 11% share.
In Russia, canned vegetable imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+7.4% per year) and Romania (+10.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 6.6%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Ukraine ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
