Market Size for Primary Cells and Batteries in Eastern Europe
For the third year in a row, the East European primary cell and battery market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 10% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in Eastern Europe
In value terms, primary cell and battery production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of primary cells and batteries decreased by -11.4% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, primary cell and battery exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland represented the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Romania (X units), achieving a 14% share of total exports. The Czech Republic (X units), Hungary (X units) and Russia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cell and battery exports from Poland stood at +15.3%. At the same time, Romania (+46.0%), Russia (+33.3%) and Hungary (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +46.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Romania (+13 p.p.) and Poland (+7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-16.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with an 11% share.
In Poland, primary cell and battery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+5.6% per year) and Romania (+28.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries
Imports in Eastern Europe
For the seventh year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded growth in overseas purchases of primary cells and batteries, which increased by 1.8% to X units in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +91.6% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X units) and Poland (X units) represented the major importers of primary cells and batteries in Eastern Europe, together making up 61% of total imports. Romania (X units) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (5.5%), Ukraine (5.1%) and Hungary (4.8%). Belarus (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 65% share of total imports.
Poland, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 9.4%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
