After two years of decline, the East European market for coated printing and writing papers increased by 14% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a mild shrinkage. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, coated printing and writing paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 30%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Poland represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 43% of total exports. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by the Czech Republic (13%) and Lithuania (6.1%). Slovakia (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest coated printing and writing paper supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 14% share.
In Poland, coated printing and writing paper exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+5.0% per year) and Russia (+17.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 7.2%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of coated printing and writing papers were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons) represented the largest importer of coated printing and writing papers, committing 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together mixing up a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Ukraine (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.
Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coated printing and writing papers imports, with a CAGR of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Hungary (-1.1%), the Czech Republic (-1.8%), Slovakia (-2.5%), Estonia (-2.9%), Ukraine (-7.8%) and Russia (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine and Russia saw its share reduced by -3.2% and -12.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Russia ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
