Exports in Eastern Europe

For the third consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded decline in overseas shipments of printing ink, which decreased by -2.5% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing ink exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) represented the key exporter of printing ink, generating 36% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Lithuania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - each amounted to a 7.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+20.9%), Ukraine (+9.9%), the Czech Republic (+5.2%), Belarus (+2.0%) and Latvia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hungary (-1.1%) and Lithuania (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+15 p.p.), Russia (+4.9 p.p.) and Ukraine (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-1.8 p.p.), Hungary (-3.6 p.p.) and Lithuania (-21 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest printing ink supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 13% share.

In Poland, printing ink exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+1.1% per year) and Lithuania (-1.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Printing Ink Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

Printing ink imports declined to X tons in 2022, reducing by -6.5% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 6.3% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, printing ink imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 10%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 53% of total imports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (7.8%), Hungary (7.5%), Romania (5.1%) and Slovakia (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +3.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest printing ink importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports. Hungary, Romania, Belarus and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +3.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 9.8%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
