In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the East European market for pulp from fibres other than wood, when its value decreased by -29.3% to $X. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of pulp from fibres other than wood increased by 1.7% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of pulp from fibres other than wood skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +177.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 64%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Hungary represented the major exporter of pulp from fibres other than wood in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together generating a 24% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pulp from fibres other than wood exports from Hungary stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Estonia (+92.2%), Latvia (+87.8%) and Slovakia (+59.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +92.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Estonia (+6.6 p.p.), Slovakia (+6 p.p.) and Latvia (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the largest pulp from fibres other than wood supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Hungary stood at +7.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (-2.6% per year) and Estonia (+107.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 37% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After four years of decline, overseas purchases of pulp from fibres other than wood increased by 28% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of pulp from fibres other than wood soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of imports of pulp from fibres other than wood in 2022 were Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together recording 74% of total import. The Czech Republic (X tons) took an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (4.6%). The following importers - Hungary (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each finished at a 7.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Ukraine ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total imports. The Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +10.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
