Pumpkin Market Size in Eastern Europe

After two years of growth, the East European pumpkin market decreased by -0.5% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Pumpkin Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, pumpkin production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -11.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pumpkin exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +122.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland was the key exporter of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Russia (12%), Latvia (7.5%) and Bulgaria (7.3%). The following exporters - Romania (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - each amounted to a 7.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pumpkin exports from Poland stood at +13.0%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+23.1%), Latvia (+21.2%), Russia (+18.6%), Hungary (+14.5%), Romania (+14.0%) and the Czech Republic (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Poland (+24 p.p.), Russia (+8.4 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+6.6 p.p.), Bulgaria (+5.8 p.p.), Latvia (+5.8 p.p.), Hungary (+2.2 p.p.) and Romania (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest pumpkin supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), together accounting for 67% of total exports.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +38.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+19.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were imported in Eastern Europe; declining by -10.9% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Romania (8.8%), the Czech Republic (6.3%), Bulgaria (6.2%) and Ukraine (5.9%). Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ukraine (+19.3%), Poland (+16.7%), Romania (+14.1%), Hungary (+11.3%), Bulgaria (+10.4%) and the Czech Republic (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2022. Poland (+8.6 p.p.), Ukraine (+5.9 p.p.) and Romania (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -15% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +18.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
