Pyrites Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the East European pyrites market increased by 4.1% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pyrites production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pyrites exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 84%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), constituting a 30% share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pyrites exports, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012 to 2022. Romania (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+64 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Romania (-65.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest pyrites supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Russia, pyrites exports increased at an average annual rate of +36.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 68%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Romania totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+7.9%).

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of pyrites decreased by -38.4% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 16%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, pyrites imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) was the largest importer of pyrites, comprising 40% of total imports. Bulgaria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Poland (21%) and Russia (5.7%). The following importers - Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - together made up 9.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total imports. Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +35.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+17.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
