Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of cattle hide and skin production, comprising approx. 47% of total volume. Moreover, cattle hide and skin production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), threefold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+5.7% per year) and Ukraine (-2.5% per year).

In 2021, the average cattle hide and skin yield in Eastern Europe was estimated at X kg per head, picking up by 8.4% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the yield attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The global number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production reduced modestly to X heads in 2021, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. As a result, the number of producing animals attained the peak level of X heads. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of this number failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 62% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland was the largest exporter of raw hides and skins of cattle in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 41% of total exports in 2021. Slovakia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +20.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest cattle hide and skin supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 12% share.

In Poland, cattle hide and skin exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-6.5% per year) and Hungary (+18.9% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 26% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 32% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 56%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Slovakia was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together committing a 58% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +31.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of cattle in Eastern Europe, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Slovakia amounted to -4.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+31.9% per year) and Poland (-7.1% per year).
