Recovered Fibre Pulp Market Size in Eastern Europe

For the fourth year in a row, the East European recovered fibre pulp market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 34% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, exports of recovered fibre pulp in Eastern Europe dropped sharply to X tons, falling by -33.7% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 78%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, recovered fibre pulp exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 87%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) represented roughly 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), comprising a 6.1% share of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +135.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 77% of total exports. Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +130.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, recovered fibre pulp imports in Eastern Europe rose rapidly to X tons, with an increase of 14% on 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, recovered fibre pulp imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 43%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) held a 9.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (8.8%). Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Czech Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the recovered fibre pulp imports, with a CAGR of +66.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Poland (-4.4%) and Russia (-21.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Czech Republic (+74 p.p.) and Romania (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Poland (-18.4 p.p.) and Russia (-49.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Romania ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 74% of total imports. The Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 6.3%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -40% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
