Paddy Rice Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European paddy rice market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, picking up by 5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Paddy Rice Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, paddy rice production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of paddy rice production, comprising approx. 88% of total volume. Moreover, paddy rice production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bulgaria (X tons), more than tenfold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.4% share.
In Russia, paddy rice production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Bulgaria (+1.2% per year) and Ukraine (-10.1% per year).
The average paddy rice yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at 2021 figures. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 7.9% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the paddy rice harvested area in Eastern Europe expanded modestly to X ha, surging by 2.7% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 3.8%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to paddy rice production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, exports of paddy rice in Eastern Europe stood at X tons, with an increase of 12% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paddy rice exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 57%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 63% of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 29% share, followed by Romania (6.2%).
Exports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -11.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Romania (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bulgaria (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-20.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest paddy rice supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Romania ($X), together comprising 97% of total exports.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +7.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of paddy rice were imported in Eastern Europe; rising by 80% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
Bulgaria (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented roughly 67% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together constituting a 25% share of total imports. Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +56.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Romania ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 77% of total imports. Ukraine, Hungary and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +51.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
