In 2021, overseas shipments of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 32%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 40% of total exports. Slovakia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by the Czech Republic (12%), Bulgaria (10%), Russia (8.4%) and Lithuania (5%). Hungary (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bulgaria (+11.0%), Russia (+7.3%), Lithuania (+6.5%) and the Czech Republic (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +11.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Slovakia (-2.7%) and Hungary (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bulgaria (+5.6 p.p.), Russia (+3.2 p.p.), Lithuania (+1.7 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+1.5 p.p.) and Poland (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Slovakia (-6.6 p.p.) and Hungary (-9.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +1.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+5.2% per year) and Slovakia (-5.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 11%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in supplies from abroad of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), which increased by 9.5% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +39.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +36.3% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the main importers of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), together creating 89% of total imports. The following importers - Belarus (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +11.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Romania ($X), together comprising 49% of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +9.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
